St. King Charles the Martyr was the second son of King James the First of England and Sixth of Scotland. When Charles' brother died in 1612 he became heir to the throne. Charles inherited his father's belief in the Divine right of Kings and that belief led to his own death. Charles was in constant dispute with his Parliaments and ruled without one for eleven years.

He was born in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1600. He became King in 1625, the same year he married Henrietta Marie of France, (after whom Maryland was named) and was the father of nine, two of whom Charles the Second and James the Second were also kings.

From 1642 until 1649 the Civil War raged in England and Scotland and was triggered by Charles' attempt to arrest five members of Parliament. In 1649 Parliament tried the King for warring against his kingdom and Parliament. The King steadfastly refused to recognize the authority and legality of the court.

On January 30 of that same year the King was publicly beheaded at Whitehall.

We are currently involved in the following charities and activities:

  • Supporting Christian Congregations in and vicinity of the Holy Land
  • The SILENT KNIGHT Program
  • The MicroCredits Program
  • Veterans Hospital
  • Support to and working relationship with the United Nations
  • Cooperative efforts with the International Peace Bureau

Our support are in terms of economical contributions and by voluntary work.

The Priory holds two investitures each year bringing postulants into the Order. These Investitures are followed by receptions and banquets. The Priory also hold at least two Socials, one in the Spring and one in Winter.

The Priory of Saint King Charles The Martyr was installed May 25, 1974 by the GPUSA in Washington DC. The Founding Prior was Chev. John Griffin Richardson Roundtree. Since then there has been XV Priors, including the new Prior XV Craig Carlson. The Priory is unique in a sense that it has international members and members that live far away from the Washington DC area. Our members’ roster counts up to 400 members, which indicates that we are one of the largest Priories in the USA.

Our economy is sound and we use all available economical resources to progress our charities and activities. As a priory we pay our "taxes" to the international organization and the Grand Priory USA, to give our support for national and international programs.
